Hot Spring Haven
Gelephu, Bhutan • 2024
Project Overview
Hot Spring Haven is a wellness resort in Bhutan that thoughtfully integrates wellness tourism with sustainable architectural practices, grounded in the nation's rich cultural heritage. By featuring natural hot springs revered for their therapeutic qualities, the design creates an immersive wellness experience that honors Bhutanese architectural traditions while promoting sustainability.
Concept & Approach
The design follows a spatial journey that begins with fully traditional structures and gradually transitions into contemporary spaces, creating an experiential narrative that deconstructs and reinterprets Bhutanese architectural heritage. This approach embodies both cultural authenticity and modern relevance, offering a sanctuary that resonates with tradition and innovation alike.
Challenges & Solutions
The primary challenge was finding a balance between preserving traditional Bhutanese architectural elements while adapting them for contemporary wellness needs. The project required thoughtful integration with the challenging terrain along the Mo Chhu River tributary, and ensuring the development aligned with Bhutan's Gross National Happiness philosophy and 'high value, low impact' tourism model.
Sustainability Features
The resort employs sustainable architectural practices using locally sourced materials to minimize environmental impact. It incorporates eco-efficient design strategies including passive solar design, natural ventilation, and water conservation techniques. The layout preserves natural landscapes and biodiversity while supporting local craftsmanship and cultural heritage.
